B&B The books of Breakfast and Brunch:

Hugo, a chef and restaurateur by experience, lives with his wife Pippa at the award winning bed and breakfast guesthouse, Woodlands Country House, near Padstow in Cornwall.  Pippa’s guesthouse has an unsurpassed reputation for its diverse and delicious breakfast menu.

Hugo, badly injured in a car accident some years ago, has for many years written about his favourite subject, food!  These books
are a wonderful journey through the glorious world of breakfast and Brunch.  The recipes are old and new, British and International, sophisticated and simple and even gives the hung-over student ideas for lifting the day.  Hugo has always experimented with breakfast menus and wholeheartedly agrees with Somerset Maugham who is quoted as saying “To eat well in England, you should have breakfast three times a day”!!

Breakfast, as we know is not only ‘the best meal of the day’ but is also ‘the most important meal of the day! Brunch, we think, originated in America and as the name implies, should be eaten in-between or instead of breakfast and lunch. This usually informal feast can be eaten any day of the week but particularly on Sundays so it can be a leisurely experience. Eaten in your pyjamas surrounded by the Sunday papers.

When you read ‘Breakfast’ and ‘Brunch’, it is like having a conversation with Hugo who is a well known and much loved character in the Padstow area.  The books are  littered with his personal asides which make it a most enjoyable and humorous read.  I would suggest that you make one of the delicious drinks recipes, put your feet up and enjoy this entertaining and amusing book.  One thing is certain, you will now be making breakfast and brunch all through the day!

“It’s great reading these books” say Rick Stein, celebrity chef in Padstow (in the Bruch Book); “they are amusing as well as having some lovely recipes.”

The Book of Breakfasts

Somebody once said; 'Breakfast is the most important meal of the day'. Everybody should start a busy day with breakfast.
It is meant to be good for your intelligence, lowers stress and (believe it or not) keeps the weight down even reduces it!

I have been reliably informed that a good bit of cholesterol in the mornings, gets rid of suicidal tendencies however it was a dairy
farmer who told me this!

Breakfast should be eaten leisurely, at a table with an array of condiments scattered around to compliment the first meal of the day.

Breakfast in France

Our Holiday in France (my wife having a B&B only allows us to holiday in January!): I was quite dismayed by the breakfasts there.
The nearest to a cooked breakfast was a delicious sausage sandwich produced to us in a motorway stop near Bordeaux.
Other than that, it was fluffy pastries and fruit – no wonder all the French are thin and why they take 2 hours over lunch.

Brunch Book

I believe Brunch is an American invention, for a meal as the name would imply, to be eaten in-between or instead of breakfast
and lunch. This is a feast, usually informal pyjamas and dressing gowns can be worn, at leisure, on Sundays with the papers and/or on holiday. It is more substantial than an early morning breakfast (well, mine are) and may go to two or three courses!
Starter main course toast and jam or a ‘puddingey’ thing. These days, it is quite fashionable to have ‘Brunch Meetings’ in the
City offices where the moguls of business can wheel and deal without the inconvenience of getting up early to slot in a hurried
breakfast. Nothing appals me more than discussing business over breakfast, it can’t be good for you, but brunch is slightly different.
You will be able to buy The ‘Brunch’ book on-line from this website. Buy both books; ‘Breakfast’ and ‘Brunch’,
and you get a 10% discount!

Nearly everybody can make breakfast - if they can't, it is very easy to learn. Hopefully this book will inspire you to make a great
breakfast. There are Breakfasts that are good for you, some that will put on a few pounds, substantial, light or fruity, spicy or creamy,
some to sort out a hangover, or a work of art to eat late on Sunday morning with the papers and listening to The Archers (for American readers; the Archers are farming folk depicted in a radio 'soap' - something some of us Brits have been listening to for the past forty
years!) There are ideas for quick breakfasts and breakfasts you prepare the night before.
